Heading into the cold winter season, you may be interested in upgrading your vehicle with a remote starter. DroneMobile remote start takes things to the next level with unlimited range remote start and keyless entry from your smartphone.
If you're like us, you might be an avid do-it-yourselfer. That's great! For adding DroneMobile to a vehicle, there are some instances where DIY is an option for you, and others where you will be in better hands with an Authorized Dealer/Installer.
Can I install DroneMobile myself?
In general, the DroneMobile team HIGHLY advises customers to visit a nearby Authorized Dealer for installation. Authorized dealers receive expert training on how to install, test, and troubleshoot DroneMobile systems so that you can have the best experience possible.
However, if you already have a compatible remote start/alarm AND you can easily access the system in your vehicle - then YES - you can add DroneMobile connectivity yourself! Read the next section for a step-by-step guide on how to add DroneMobile to an existing remote start/security system.
The other instance where DIY installation is possible is for installing DroneMobile as a standalone GPS tracker. Read the following section for a step-by-step guide on this installation method.
If you do not have a remote start/alarm installed yet on your vehicle, your only option is to visit Authorized Dealer for installation. Remote start/alarm systems like Compustar and iDatastart generally come with a lifetime warranty that is voided if not installed with an Authorized Dealer. Save yourself the time and headache and visit your nearby dealer for this option.
How to Add DroneMobile to an existing remote start/security system
What you need:
- Drone X1 LTE module
- Data cable (grey connectors, included with X1)
- Compatible remote starter/alarm (already installed)

- Find the installation location of the compatible remote/start alarm in your vehicle.
- Connect one side of the data cable to the X1 LTE module.
- Connect the other side of the data cable to a 2-way data port on the remote/start alarm.
- On most Firstech systems (Compustar, Arctic Start, NuStart), this is a 4-pin GREY port that is on the accessory side of the control module.
- On most iDatastart systems (e.g. HCX), this is a 4-pin BLUE port.
- The LEDs on the DroneMobile will start to light up, indicating power and connectivity.
- Mount the X1 module securely high up in the dashboard for optimal cellular reception.
- Download the DroneMobile App and register using the serial number on the X1 module.
How to install DroneMobile as a standalone GPS tracker
If you want to use DroneMobile for GPS tracking ONLY, then a hardwire installation is possible.

What you need:
- Drone X1MAX LTE module
- FT-HRN-OBD-II -> Advanced installation harness with plug-and-play OBD plug (X1MAX only)
Installation steps:
- Connect one side of the hardwire harness to the X1 LTE module.
- Plug the OBD-II connector into the OBD-II port in your vehicle. Most vehicles will provide power, ground, and ignition through this port.
- For advanced installations, the FT-HRN-OBD-II harness includes three programmable outputs and one input for hardwiring additional features that can be controlled from the DroneMobile App. Some examples are:
- Single/double pulse output for lock/unlock
- Latched output for starter kill
- These must be configured using the DroneMobile installer portal at https://install.myfirstech.com
- Mount the X1 module securely high up in the dashboard for optimal cellular reception.
- Download the DroneMobile App and register using the serial number on the X1 module.
Please note: DroneMobile GPS tracking features are available with a Premium or higher subscription, which start at $11.99/month.
